Networking with other financial advisors has typically been a significant time and financial commitment for RIA principals, requiring travel to industry trade shows or custodian conferences, and a healthy entertainment budget.
But what if you could avoid the time and expense and network right in your own back yard? That’s the idea behind the RIA Roadshow, a local, half-day educational event for RIA firms of all sizes in cities across the U.S. – and it’s completely free to attend.
In 2014, the Roadshow will visit about 40 cities, bringing advisors together to learn about best-practice expertise on operational, compliance, technological, and investment topics impacting RIAs. In most cities, the RIA Roadshow is the only opportunity for local firms to get together, share ideas and best practices and build a real community of local investment advisers.
Topics include how to properly prepare for a regulatory exam, how to more efficiently handle small accounts, and how to transition from running a practice to a scalable organization.
The first set of 2014 Roadshow cities spanned Texas and included Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. On average, about 30 RIA firms attended each event, discussing the latest developments in the industry, such as the evolution of social media and how a number of growing RIA firms are incorporating new and traditional assets classes into their firm’s investment and internal operations strategy.
It was exciting to see the strong reception we received from RIAs in attendance at the Texas events, which we co-sponsor with Trust Company of America and other RIA industry partners. For example, 86% of RIA firms surveyed who attended a recent RIA Roadshow event said they were extremely or very likely to recommend future Roadshow events to fellow advisory firms. That kind of response indicates that there is a real need for networking and educational event on a local level to serve RIAs.
